In partnership with the King Sejong Institute, Bahrain Polytechnic concluded the “Discover Korea” programme which aimed to introduce the Korean language and culture to Bahrain. The programme commenced on the 15th of July and concluded on 21st of August 2019.

The programme was introduced with the aim of spreading the Korean language and culture through a series of introductory classes, which included day to day actions such as introducing one’s self, shopping, and ordering food. Additionally, the learners were introduced to the Korean tea ceremony, learned to make a Korean snack, and were engaged in traditional Korean games, and handcrafts.

The programme comes as part of Bahrain Polytechnic’s commitment to employability and community education in an aim to empower Bahraini’s with necessary knowledge and skills to best serve them in the future.

The initiative is also in line with the vision of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to spread the Korean language and culture in the Kingdom of Bahrain through the King Sejong Institute, and amongst its plans is to offer Korean as part of the curriculum at Bahrain Polytechnic, along with the continuation of offering community education programs such as “Discover Korea”.

Bahrain Polytechnic hosted its first Negotiation Competition at the campus on 11th and 12th May 2018, where students participated in teams of two to negotiate complex contractual agreements.

As negotiation is one of the top employability skills required in all industries, the competition was open to all Polytechnic degree students to register, especially since the disputes varied in scope to encompass different abilities and degree programmes.

Prior to the start of the Bahrain Polytechnic Negotiation Competition (BPNC), students were required to attend three negotiation skills training classes before being able to participate in the competition. The format of the two-day competition was a knockout, where 20 students in teams of two challenged each other in front of a panel of judges.

Students engaged in captivating negotiations on matters relating to landlord and tenant agreement, merger of two separate departments in a company, contract to engage the services of a medical consultant, and the transfer of an Egyptian footballer to an English football club.

On the final day, the first, second, and third place winners were awarded, including special awards to students who have performed outstandingly, such as best bargaining skills and best structure in a negotiation.

Ms. Yasmin Sebah, the organizer of the BPNC, commented: “The competition allowed the participants to challenge themselves and others, it provided the opportunity for constructive feedback and critique from a panel of judges and the opportunity for students to engage with polytechnic staff and industry experts from the business, legal, engineering and insurance sector.

“All students showed great enthusiasm and dedication in their preparation for the competition, team work, ability to work collegially with the other team and commitment towards reaching an outcome that satisfies their needs.” said Ms. Sebah.

Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, CEO of Bahrain Polytechnic, stated: “Involving our students in such competitions allows them to express themselves and test the skills that they have learnt. As we adopt the problem-based learning approach at the Polytechnic, this competition is structured to test how students can analyze and solve real-life problems.

“We were delighted to host such a competition at our campus, and we hope that we can continue to organize similar competitions in the future.” concluded the CEO.

The results for the competition were as follows:

Winners (Bachelor of Engineering Technology students):

Zaid Ali Shaker AlTawash,

Osama AbdulHafeez Hafiz Raikhy

His Highness Sh. Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister, the Chairman of the Supreme Council for Higher Education and Training Development, has patronised Bahrain Polytechnic’s fourth graduation ceremony which took place on 29th November 2017 at the Sh. Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Hall, University of Bahrain, Sakhir. The ceremony was attended by several officials, ministers, alumni, parents and guests.

H.H. Sh. Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa praised the Polytechnic for elevating its name to the highest of levels as statistically attested by the progress in graduate numbers, their standards and their ability to enter the labour market. More than 70% of the Polytechnic’s curricula cover the practical aspects to meet the labour market requirements and the business sector, His Highness said. He added that the Polytechnic, which was inaugurated in 2008, has developed remarkably in terms of its theoretical and practical subjects, where more than 85% of its graduates found jobs immediately. Graduates also found jobs before they graduated, opted to become entrepreneurs, or pursued for postgraduate studies.

The Deputy Premier hailed the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for providing utmost care and attentiveness to boost the educational development supported by His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister, and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister.

H.H. Sh. Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa stressed the importance of the Polytechnic, noting its significantly successful output since it was established as part of the Education and Training Development Scheme in line with the Government Action Plan and the Bahrain Vision 2030.

His Highness congratulated the graduates and their parents and thanked Bahrain Polytechnic’s Board of Trustees, the CEO, and all staff members from the academic and the administrative bodies for their efforts in achieving the institution’s mission.

On this occasion, H.E. Dr. Majed bin Ali Al-Nuaimi, Minister of Education and Chairman of the Higher Education Council delivered a speech where he thanked the patron of the ceremony for his wise leadership to the council. He stressed the importance of applied and technical education which is based on creativity and innovation towards enhancing sustainable development. He added that Bahrain Polytechnic will continue empowering the students with the required skills and competencies for the fourth industrial revolution.

During the ceremony, the CEO of Bahrain Polytechnic, Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, expressed his gratitude to the patron of the ceremony H.H. Sh. Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, and to the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, H.E. Sh. Hisham bin Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, for their great role in establishing the vision, mission and values of the Polytechnic and for their continuous support. He also thanked the academic and administrative bodies at the Polytechnic for their constant efforts and dedication to the Polytechnic.

The guest of honour, H.E. Sh. Daij bin Salman Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Company (ASRY) and Chairman of Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), delivered a speech in which he stressed that Polytechnic is a living example of the modern educational process, and managed to produce a large number of graduates who are characterized by high efficiency, quality, capability, and responsibility to enter the labour market.

H.E. Sh. Daij bin Salman Al Khalifa pointed out that Alba is witnessing a huge expansion which is a major shift in the primary aluminum industry and the manufacturing industries that depend on it. This requires employing more graduates specialized in this field, especially since this national company employs a large number of Bahrainis, which amounts to 85% of the total workforce.

After that, Polytechnic graduate Mohammed Abdulrasool Ghayeb delivered a speech on behalf of the graduates, followed by a movie done by Bahrain Polytechnic students.

H.E. Sh. Hisham bin Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain Polytechnic’s Board of Trustees, expressed his thanks and appreciation to H.H. Sh. Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa for his patronage of the Polytechnic graduation ceremony annually and for his continuous support to the Polytechnic.
