Continuing its active role in spreading social awareness, the Polytechnic held an informative session to an audience of students and staff regarding the chronic disorder of Multiple sclerosis at the campus on December 24th 2013.

Multiple sclerosis, or MS for short, is a disabling disease which involves an immune system attack against the central nervous system; gradually affecting the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.

The two hour session consisted of Professor Moiz Bakhiet, a renowned professor and Chief Executive Director of Al Jawhara Centre for Molecular Medicine & Inherited Disorders which briefed the condition to the crowd, followed by a story given by a Bahraini patient with MS.

The Student Services Directorate at Bahrain Polytechnic, was delighted with the action of the students which helped put together the event; a few which suffer from MS.

Dr Nawal Zewayed, Acting Director of the Student Services, said: “I’m glad to see that Bahrain Polytechnic is doing its part in being socially aware. We’ve done events related to cancer and diabetes as well.

“Around 1’000 people in Bahrain suffer from MS. It’s difficult to notice when a person has [the condition], as the symptoms are unpredictable. We thought that bringing up the subject of MS at the campus would make students more aware about it.” stated Dr. Zewayed.

We Care Bahrain, Bahrain MS Patients Society and Speak Up Team were few of the several that attended the event on the day, as students were given the opportunity to volunteer at one of the organizations.

Acting CEO of Bahrain Polytechnic, Dr. Mohamed Al Aseeri was awarded by the Bahrain MS Patients Society at the end of the event for their involvement to bring the matter of MS to light.

Dr. Al Aseeri thanked the societies, guests, staff, students and the Student Services Directorate for their participation to attend the session. Furthermore, the Acting CEO added that similar social events will recur at the Polytechnic.
