Bahrain Polytechnic held a press conference on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, to announce the launch of its first-ever applied PhD programmes since the institution’s establishment: the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Engineering and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science. In addition, Polytechnic announced three new applied research-based master’s programmes: Master of Science by Research in Mechanical Engineering, Master of Science by Research in Electronics Engineering, and Master of Science by Research in Computer Science.

This milestone reflects Bahrain Polytechnic’s commitment to strengthening postgraduate education and scientific research while responding to the evolving needs of the labour market. The new programmes align with Bahrain Polytechnic’s 2026–2029 Strategic Vision, which supports Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 and aims to build an innovative educational ecosystem that contributes to sustainable development and prepares highly qualified national talent for the future

During the conference, Bahrain Polytechnic CEO Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin officially launched the new postgraduate programmes, highlighting that they were developed using an advanced research and applied learning approach designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and expertise needed to keep pace with rapid changes in the labour market and contribute effectively to Bahrain’s development and innovation journey.

Professor Ó Catháin emphasized that the introduction of the new PhD and master’s programmes marks a significant strategic milestone for Bahrain Polytechnic and reflects its continued commitment to advancing applied education and scientific research in the Kingdom of Bahrain. He noted that the programmes were developed in partnership with industry and aligned with national priorities and the needs of a knowledge- and innovation-based economy. He added that the programmes will provide students with advanced research opportunities that support the development of national talent capable of leading digital and technological transformation across various sectors.

Meanwhile, DCEO Academic Affairs & Registrar, Dr. Louise ONolan, explained that the programmes will follow an applied research model focused on addressing real-world challenges facing industrial and technological sectors. She stated that all research projects will require approval from the Scientific Research Committee and support from relevant industry partners, including access to data, equipment, and technical supervision, ensuring high-quality research outcomes directly connected to labour market needs.

Applicants will be assessed based on their academic background, research experience, and alignment of their interests with approved projects developed in collaboration with industry partners. The programmes will offer fully funded seats for accepted students, in addition to opportunities to work as research assistants within approved projects.

Dean of Research and Innovation, Dr. Philippe Pringuet, also confirmed that the new research programmes align with the national strategy for scientific research and innovation and focus on producing applied research with direct impact on industry and society. He added that Bahrain Polytechnic will use these programmes to strengthen a culture of interdisciplinary applied research and build effective research partnerships with industrial and academic institutions locally and internationally, contributing to national economic growth and enhancing Bahrain’s competitiveness in technology, engineering, and innovation.

Applications for the new programmes are scheduled to open from 5 July until 20 August 2026, in preparation for the start of the first semester in September 2026. Interested applicants are encouraged to visit Bahrain Polytechnic’s official website for admission requirements, application dates, and registration procedures.
