Aysha Abdulla Abdulkarim, a student on her last year majoring in the Bachelor of Logistics Management (BILM) degree program at the Polytechnic, was awarded with the CILT NZ (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport) Award at New Zealand for the best undergraduate level project in a logistics and transport topic on October 17th 2013.

John Webb, the Polytechnic’s Project Manager for Logistics was not surprised by the choice, as Aysha delivered a concise, informative and exceptionally well planned project covering the salient elements of DHL Bahrain outbound operations.

“I believe that this is a great achievement for Aysha, as well as the Bahrain Polytechnic staff. One of our students has won an annual internationally based academic award in competition with other students from New Zealand.” said Mr. Webb.

Aysha submitted her industry project based on outbound operations in DHL Bahrain; identifying several key issues and challenges faced within the global logistics organization and provided relevant suggestions and recommendations to overcome these challenges.

She travelled to New Zealand to collect her award under the sponsorship of the Board of Trustees of Bahrain Polytechnic.

“It took 14 weeks, off-campus, to complete the project. She was dedicated and time-efficient. Her excellent communication skills were critical in producing this project, as she had to do it in a second language.” he continued.

Mr. Webb also added how the efforts put into the work of the Polytechnic students will not go unrewarded.

“It just goes to show how far our students go in order to produce quality work. They want their work to meet not just academic standards, but corporate standards.

“We [at the Polytechnic] work on a problem-based learning approach; an internationally recognized teaching methodology. Following the goals of Bahrain’s Vision 2030, our programmes are embedded with methods which prepare the student to be a work-ready graduate; the reason why they exceed expectations.” concluded Mr. Webb.

Head of Human Resources of DHL Express Bahrain Henry Fares stated: “DHL Bahrain is proud of the achievement of Aysha.

“DHL has been always devoted for talented students. It is our great pleasure to support the Polytechnic’s students in their academic and professional development. Through our Internship program we offered the interns the opportunity to gain practical training and hands-on, real world experience that will help them meet their educational development and career aspiration.

“During her internship Aysha discovered the logistics sector from a global leader. Under the supervision of our expert managers, the interns have been assigned roles that mirror actual working conditions.” he concluded.

Aysha expressed her delight towards the entire experience and said: “I am so proud to be the first ever Bahraini to win this award and represent my country in such international recognition.

“I take this opportunity to urge Bahrain Polytechnic students to work hard and pay extra effort in their projects and assignments in order to reach the level that will make their work eligible for these international competitions and hopefully be recognized and awarded by international organizations.

“I would like to thank [DHL] for giving me this opportunity and being supportive to me.

“I would also like to thank Bahrain Polytechnic management and Mr. John Webb for their support and giving me the opportunity of personally receiving the award in Auckland.” she concluded.

Several top management of the Polytechnic congratulated Aysha for her accomplishment. Acting CEO Dr. Mohamed Al Aseeri commented that he was delighted with the success of the first student from the Kingdom of Bahrain to collect the award, and that is proud to offer a unique programme such as BILM; a major which is in high demand in Bahrain.

Similarly, Dr. Hasan praised the final year student and emphasized how these international awards motivate students to work harder and academically progress. He also encouraged the students to participate as it will reflect positively on them in the future.
