Bahrain Polytechnic and the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at establishing a strategic partnership to enhance cooperation in education and training, applied research and innovation, and engagement with the maritime sector, contributing to the development of national talent and supporting the growth of Bahrain’s maritime sector.
The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration between the two institutions in developing and implementing joint applied research projects, delivering specialised maritime training programmes and professional certifications, facilitating the exchange of expertise, academic and administrative staff, and students, and providing students with practical training and industry placement opportunities. These initiatives will further strengthen the alignment between education, labour market needs, and the maritime sector.
The MoU also provides for exploring opportunities to develop new academic programmes and micro-credentials aligned with international standards and industry needs, as well as examining the potential establishment of a Marine and Maritime Institute in the Kingdom of Bahrain, supporting the development of a specialised ecosystem for education, research, and innovation in this field.
On this occasion, H.E. Mr. Bader Hood Al-Mahmood, Undersecretary for Ports and Maritime Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, noted that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Bahrain Polytechnic and the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute represents an important step toward strengthening the knowledge and research foundations of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s maritime sector. He highlighted that the partnership aligns with strategic efforts to further develop the ports and maritime sector while equipping national talent with the skills and expertise needed to keep pace with global developments.
He also underscored the importance of specialised international partnerships in enhancing the quality of education and applied research, while creating broader opportunities for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and the adoption of international best practices. Such collaborations contribute to the Kingdom’s efforts to develop an integrated maritime and logistics ecosystem and further strengthen Bahrain’s competitiveness and position as a leading regional hub for maritime transport and logistics.
In this regard, Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin, CEO of Bahrain Polytechnic, stated that this partnership with CMMI reflects the Polytechnic’s commitment to sectors of strategic importance to the Kingdom of Bahrain, including the maritime sector, and to leveraging the opportunities this sector presents to develop new areas that serve the Kingdom’s future.
He said: “The maritime sector represents an important part of Bahrain’s economic future, and as a higher education institution, it is our responsibility to anticipate this future and explore opportunities that can strengthen the Kingdom’s position in this field. Through our partnership with the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, we look forward to building a long-term relationship that opens the door to meaningful initiatives and supports our ambition to develop an integrated maritime ecosystem in the Kingdom of Bahrain.”
