The concept of sound energy in musical composition

The main objective of this research (PhD Thesis) is to study the relationship between energy and listening, aiming to understand the influence that sound energy has on the listening experience of a musical work. The concept of energy is exposed under two biases. The first, in chapters 2 and 3, is an analytical approach, applying it in the following repertoire: Quattro Pezzi su una nota sola, by Scelsi; Voyage into the Golden Screen, by Per Nørgård; and Wolfgang Rihm’s String Quartet Nº3: Im Innersten. The second, in chapter 4, is a compositional approach, employing the concept in my own music. In Chapters 2 and 3, I examine the relationship between energy and the phenomenon of listening. In chapter 4, I present a method of employing the concept of sound energy as a compositional tool, clarifying some of my choices about the maintenance of the interest of listening. The scores and recordings of the five works written during this research are presented in chapter 5.
